Poker

Poker is the exception on this site. Every other game here has a fixed, negative expectation that no skill can reverse. Poker does not. You play against other players, not the house, and the house takes a fixed cut — the rake — regardless of who wins. Beat the other players by more than the rake, and you win.

That does not make poker easy, or even likely to be profitable. Most players lose, the rake is relentless, and the skill gap at any real table is smaller than beginners assume. But the ceiling is genuinely positive, which is why poker is discussed here in terms of decisions rather than house edge.

The math below — pot odds, equity, hand rankings — is the part that is objectively correct. The rest is judgement.
