What Is RTP?
Return to player explained: what the number measures, over what timescale, why the same slot ships with several different RTPs, and how it relates to volatility.
RTP — return to player — is the percentage of money wagered that a game pays back over the long run. It is the house edge inverted:
RTP + house edge = 100%
A 96% slot has a 4% house edge. A 99.54% video poker machine has a 0.46% house edge. They are the same statement.
The convention is that machine games are advertised by RTP and table games are discussed by house edge, which is one of the reasons the two are rarely compared directly. They should be:

“Long run” is longer than you think
RTP is calculated over the complete cycle of a game’s mathematics — for a slot, typically tens of millions of spins. It is not a description of a session, a day, or a machine’s lifetime with one player.
For a medium-volatility 96% slot at $1 a spin:

The 4% only becomes visible at the bottom of that table. At the top, variance is the entire story — which is why a player can be genuinely, substantially ahead on a 96% game and a different player genuinely, substantially behind, with both experiencing exactly the advertised mathematics.
The same slot ships at several RTPs
This is the part that undermines most published slot RTP lists.
Manufacturers commonly certify a title in multiple configurations — for instance 96.5%, 94.5% and 92.1% — and the operator chooses which build to deploy. Every version has the same artwork, the same features, the same name and the same paytable display. The difference is in the weighting of the reel strips, which is not visible.
So an RTP figure quoted on a review site tells you what the game can return, not what the machine in front of you does return.
Where operators are required to publish the deployed figure — parts of the UK and several EU markets — check it in the game’s info panel. Where they are not, treat published figures as an upper bound.
RTP and volatility are independent
Two games can share an RTP and behave nothing alike.
- Low volatility — frequent small wins, shallow swings. A 96% low-volatility slot grinds your balance down steadily and occasionally up.
- High volatility — long dry spells punctuated by large wins. The same 96%, delivered in a completely different shape.
Neither is mathematically better. Volatility determines how long a given bankroll lasts and how likely you are to be ahead at any moment, not what the game costs.
A rough guide for the same $100 at $1 a spin:

High volatility gives you a better chance of a big win and a better chance of losing the whole stake quickly. The expectation is unchanged.
Bonus rounds are included
A slot advertising “96% RTP” includes everything — base game, free spins, bonus rounds, jackpots. It is not 96% in the base game plus extra from features.
This matters for the “buy feature” button, which sells direct entry to the bonus round for 50–100× the stake. Buy features are certified separately and typically carry an RTP within a percentage point of the base game, sometimes slightly higher, sometimes lower. They are not a shortcut to better odds; they are a way to wager a lot of money quickly, which multiplies the cost of whatever edge the game carries.
What RTP does not tell you
- Whether the machine is “due”. Every spin is independent. A game that has paid nothing for 500 spins has exactly the same probability on spin 501.
- Your expected session result. See the table above.
- How the return is distributed. A 96% game returning almost everything through one 1-in-50,000 jackpot is a very different experience from a 96% game paying steadily.
- What the operator has deployed, unless it is published.
Practical takeaway
If you play slots, the useful moves are the boring ones: prefer operators that publish the deployed RTP, prefer higher published figures, treat volatility as a bankroll decision rather than a strategy, and remember that a 96% slot at 600 spins an hour costs about $24 an hour at $1 a spin — more than a $25 blackjack table.
